How to use Word Counter

  1. 1Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. 2Read the counts above the box. They update as you type.
  3. 3Edit your text until it fits the limit you need.

Count words for essays, posts and forms

Essays, applications and social posts often come with a word or character limit. Paste your text here to see the count instantly, then trim until it fits. The counts update with every keystroke, so you can edit right in the box.

Character counts include spaces unless you look at the “Without spaces” figure, which some forms use instead. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line, and sentences end with a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or the Hindi danda (।).

Frequently asked questions

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is stored or uploaded. Close the tab and the text is gone.

How are words counted?

Any group of characters separated by spaces or line breaks counts as one word. This matches how most word processors and essay portals count.

Does it count characters in Hindi and other languages?

Yes. Characters are counted as you see them, so Hindi, Tamil and emoji are counted correctly rather than as several hidden code units.

How is reading time worked out?

It assumes an average reading speed of 200 words per minute and rounds up to the nearest minute.

Is there a length limit?

There’s no fixed limit. Very long texts of several hundred thousand words may make the counts update a little slower on older phones.
