Compress a photo to an exact size in KB

Many online forms only accept photos under a strict limit, often 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB. A photo straight from a phone camera is usually 2 to 5 MB, which is up to 250 times too large. This tool finds the highest quality that still fits under the size you choose, so you don’t have to guess with trial and error.

It works by testing several quality levels and keeping the best one that fits. If the image is too large even at a modest quality, it reduces the width and height slightly before trying again. That keeps faces and text sharp rather than covering them in compression blocks.

Private by design

Most online compressors upload your file to their server. This one doesn’t. Everything happens in your browser, which matters when the photo is an ID card, a signature or a document scan.

Tips for exam and job applications

  • Check whether the form also asks for exact dimensions in pixels. Resize first, then compress.
  • Use a plain, light background and even lighting. Clean photos compress better and stay sharper.
  • Keep the original. If the form rejects the file, you can compress again with a smaller target.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The compression runs inside your browser using your device’s own processor. Your photo never leaves your phone or computer, and the tool keeps working even if you go offline after the page loads.

Will the result be under the exact KB limit on exam forms?

Yes. The tool treats 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, which is the stricter reading. A file made for a 50 KB limit is accepted by portals that count 1 KB as either 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.

Why did my image get smaller in width and height?

Very small targets like 20 KB can’t hold a large phone photo at a readable quality. When that happens the tool reduces the dimensions a little so the picture stays clear instead of turning blocky.

Can I compress iPhone HEIC photos?

Yes, on iPhone. When you pick a HEIC photo, Safari converts it to JPG before handing it to the tool. On a computer, convert the HEIC file to JPG first.

Should I choose JPG or WebP?

Choose JPG for government, exam and job portals, since most accept only JPG. WebP gives slightly better quality at the same size and works well for websites.
